Cecelia 'Ceil' Murphy, 87, Longtime Fair Lawn Resident, School Aide

FAIR LAWN, N.J. -- Cecelia "Ceil" Agnes Murphy, of Fair Lawn, died on Wednesday, Sept. 28. She was 88.

Born in the Bronx, Murphy lived in Fair Lawn for nearly 60 years. She was a clerk aide at Westmoreland Elementary School in Fair Lawn for 39 years, and when she retired -- at 81 -- the school's playground was named in her honor.

"She loved her family and her job at Westmoreland and was an avid Yankee fan," information at the funeral home noted. She was a parishioner of St. Catharine Church, in Glen Rock, and she was a member of the Fair Lawn Fire Company No. 2 Ladies Auxiliary for several years.

Murphy is survived by her sons, Brian Murphy and his wife June, and Dennis Murphy and Patricia; grandchildren, Christopher, Scott and Colleen Murphy; brothers-in-law Vincent Murphy, and Patrick Murphy and his wife Eileen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Murphy; brothers Michael, Timothy and David McGrath; parents Michael and Mary Ellen McGrath; and sisters- and brothers-in-law Agnes and Edward Neafsey, Thomas Murphy, Pearl Murphy and Kathryn Ruddy.

Visiting hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Rd., in Fair Lawn. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, at St. Catharine Church, 905 South Maple Ave., Glen Rock. Interment will follow at Christ the King Cemetery, in Franklin Lakes.
