Passaic River Indian Fishing Weir Visible From Fair Lawn Ave. Bridge

FAIR LAWN, N.J. — The lack of rain this summer has exposed a piece of history of the Passaic River as it flows through Fair Lawn.

Low levels of the Passaic River reveal an ancient Leni Lenape Indian fishing weir.

The low water level made visible a dam 100 yards wide that crosses the river near the Fair Lawn Avenue bridge, a structure thought to be a fishing weir built by native people before the arrival of European colonists.

The V-shaped structure was used to channel fish through a narrow opening, making them easier to catch.
