On Monday, Feb. 24, Lester Holt announced he would stepping down after a 10-year-run at the start of the summer.
On Wednesday, March 5, NBC News announced Tom Llamas will take over for Holt.
Llamas, age 45, is a senior national correspondent and anchor of “Top Story with Tom Llamas,” an evening newscast that streams on NBC News NOW.
“I look forward to working with the world class journalists at ‘Nightly News’ and ‘Top Story’ to bring viewers the most important stories every night,” Llamas said in a statement.
The son of Cuban immigrants, Llamas grew up in Miami.
He worked at ABC News as a correspondent and substitute anchor on World News Tonight from 2014 to 2021, when he joined NBC News.
Llamas began his broadcast career in 2000 at MSNBC after graduating from Loyola University New Orleans.
“Tom has the winning combination of journalistic excellence, passionate storytelling and unyielding integrity — all characteristics that have long been trademarks of ‘NBC Nightly News," NBC News executive vice president of programming Janelle Rodriguez said in announcing the move to staffers. “Additionally, he’s been instrumental in growing NBC News NOW into the leading streaming news network, helping to introduce NBC News to a new generation of viewers.”
The 65-year-old Holt’s tenure at Nightly News began in June 2015, following eight years of steering weekend editions and co-anchoring Weekend TODAY for 12 years. After leaving Nightly News, he will transition to a full-time role at Dateline, where he has served as principal anchor for nearly 15 years.
