"We would come by on Saturdays or after school during the week," Brian, 40, said. "We'd sweep the floors, take out the garbage, all while learning what goes on in the business."
Rob started working full-time at Tri-Boro Auto Body as a teen, through Ramapo High School's work study program. Brian started after his 1994 graduation.
"It was a way for me to do something I enjoyed," Rob, 36, said. "I knew this is something I wanted to do."
Rob runs the 5,500-square foot shop, handling repairs and managing the technicians. Brian writes estimates and works directly with customers and insurance companies.
"People come in with wrecked cars and they're quite upset about it," said Brian. "It's nice to see them excited when they get their car back and it looks brand new."
Tri-Boro, located on Saddle River Road, repairs around 25 cars per week.
Inside the shop are three Car-O-Liner straightening machines with computerized measuring; 16 service bays; and two heated spray booths.
"Baking the cars adds to our efficiency," said Rob, a father of two from Oakland.
Their father, Leonard – affectionately known known as "Len" – managed the shop from 1977 until 1982, when he purchased the business.
Leonard Tanis, a 1970 Fair Lawn High School graduate and former volunteer fireman, retired to spend more time with his grandchildren, or at his Long Beach Island home.
Tri-Boro Auto Body sponsors borough baseball teams. Brian even painted the Fair Lawn High School marching band's tractor.
"I like the fact that I was able to take over a well-established business and keep it in the family," Rob said.
"We're excited to continue providing the community with quality automotive repairs," said Brian, a father of two from Oakland.
