At 3:04 a.m., police responded to the 700 block of Sanford Avenue and found a man who had been shot, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said.  While the man was being transported to a nearby hospital, the private vehicle he was in crashed into another car and then struck a light pole and transformer, overturning on its side, Fragé said.  Firefighters removed the gunshot victim from the vehicle and he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is in stable condition, Fragé said. Laquan Nowlin, 32, of East Orange, was sitting in his car at the intersection of Lanark and Sanford Avenue  when he was shot by a man who got out of the passenger seat of a dark-colored sedan July 3, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Fayola Howard, 34, dragged 55-year-old Kevin Thomas on Sanford Avenue approaching Mt. Vernon Place in Newark on Dec. 29, 2019, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said. Thomas died of his injuries on Jan. 6. Howard is facing charges of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident with an injured person.
