Longtime Turtle Back Zoo Volunteer From Belleville Honored
A plaque has been installed at Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange honoring a longtime volunteer docent who died early this year. Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo was on hand Friday to dedicate the plaque to John P. Doeffinger, a lifelong resident of Belleville. In addition to his work as a docent he also served as president of the Zoological Society of New Jersey. He died Jan. 13 at the age of 60. Newark Plans To Replace Thousands Of Water Lines In Response To Lead Crisis
The Essex County Improvement Authority is expected to issue $120 million in bonds to replace lead water lines serving most of the homes in Newark, sending an existing replacement program into overdrive in response to the city's ongoing water-quality crisis, officials said Monday in Newark. Effort To Overhaul Kingsland Ave. Bridge In Nutley Gets A Boost
The Army Corps of Engineers has issued a permit that will allow officials to seek final approval for a plan to repair or replace entirely the 114-year-old Kingsland Avenue bridge connecting Nutley and Lyndhurst, the office of Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-9) said Friday. Construction has begun on an off-leash dog park at Branch Brook Park in Newark and Belleville, officials said Friday. "We are always looking for opportunities to improve our open spaces and create recreation opportunities for the public. Hazardous Household Waste Collection Scheduled In Essex
Pesticides, herbicides and other dangerous household chemicals can be safely disposed of during Essex County's Hazardous Waste Collection Day next month. “There are some materials that should be removed from our regular waste stream because of their hazardous nature. The 43rd-annual Cherry Blossom Festival at Newark's Branch Brook Park, celebrating the spring bloom of the park's thousands of cherry blossom trees, begins Saturday with a bike race beginning at 7 a.m. A number of events follow throughout the rest of the month.
