The semifinalists for the Restaurant and Chef James Beard Awards have officially been announced — and three of them can be found right here in the Garden State.
First awarded in 1991, the James Beard Foundation’s Restaurant and Chef Awards comprise 23 culinary categories. One New Jersey chef was recognized in the ‘Outstanding Chef’ category, while two others were recognized in the ‘Best Chef’ for the entire mid-Atlantic category of DC, DE, MD, NJ, PA, and VA.

Support Rises For Family After Sudden Death Of Devoted North Jersey Caretaker, Skilled Chef, 32
Support is on the rise for the heartbroken family of devoted North Jersey caretaker and talented chef Zachary R. Fleischmann, who died unexpectedly on Friday, April 22 at the age of 32.
Born in Paterson, Zachary grew up in Towaco and Montville before moving to Boonton, where he lived at the time of his death, his obituary says.
Zachary spent the last three years as a devoted caretaker to his 97-year-old grandmother, Cornelia, and had frequently visited New York City to attend comedy shows and patronize new restaurants, according to his memorial.

Morris County Native, Businessman, Beloved Dad Dies Suddenly, 38
Morris County native, businessman, and beloved dad Christopher "Chris" Peter Stephen Findley died suddenly on Sunday, Feb. 27. He was 38.
Born at Hackettstown Memorial Hospital, Findley grew up in Morristown and attended Parsippany Hills and Morristown High Schools, his obituary says.
Findley then went on to study business administration at the County College of Morris in Randolph before moving to Aberdeen, South Dakota, in 2013, his memorial says.

The community is rallying for the son of Washington mom Erin Van Note, who died on Oct. 11 in Pennsylvania (scroll down to donate).
Born in Livingston, Erin graduated from Warren hills High School in 2006, her obituary says.
"Erin was a talented artist who enjoyed drawing, singing, music, and poetry and being with her family," her obituary says.
"She enjoyed the outdoors, nature and cooking. She was a kind, compassionate and free soul who would light up any room with her smile, her laughter, and her vibrant personality."
