People in West Orange, Fairfield and other nearby communities reported hearing a loud noise similar to an explosion Thursday night that officials said was caused by a technical problem at a PSEG facility in Roseland.
A spokesman for the utility said there was an arc and an equipment failure at the switching station off Eisenhower Parkway shortly before 10 p.m. Power flickered momentarily but there were no service interruptions, the spokesman said.
Some residents in the area speculated online that there was an explosion or fire at the switching station, but Roseland police say the facility was largely undamaged and there was never any danger to the public.
