Westfield HS Mourns Loss Of Senior Athlete Brandon Genlot Killed In Crash

Brandon Genlot, a senior at Westfield High School, died in a car crash on Monday, Nov. 11, at the age of 17, according to his obituary from the Higgins and Bonner Funeral Home website and Union County Police.

At 7:30 p.m. officers responded to a vehicle crash at Watchung Reservation on Sky Top Drive in Scotch Plains, Union County police said, and found a vehicle that had struck a tree and caught fire. Scotch Plains Fire Department arrived and extinguished the fire, police said. Brandon was found dead inside the vehicle, police said. 

At Westfield HS, Brandon was an accomplished volleyball player, known for bringing his passion and energy to the court, and inspiring his teammates, according to his obituary. Brandon also played volleyball for his club team, the Warren Sixpack.

Genlot played volleyball with athletic skill, intensity, heart and sportsmanship, a positive spirit for his teammates and coaches, his obituary reads. 

Recently inducted into the National Honor Society, Brandon had achieved fluency in Mandarin and was planning to study astrophysics in college, according to his obituary.

"Brandon was a role model, a devoted friend, a supportive classmate, and a young man who brought warmth and humor to those who knew him," his obituary reads. "His laughter, quick smile, and gentle, compassionate nature will be dearly missed."

A fundraiser has been set up to support his family. As of Wednesday, Nov. 13, more than $42,000 has been raised.

Brandon is survived by his parents, Donna and Jeff, his siblings, Daniel and Kayla, his grandmother Ann and numerous other family members and friends, according to his obituary.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Nov. 17 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at  Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Springfield. The crash remains under investigation, police said.
