Kitty's Back: Elmwood Park Firefighter Rescues Frightened Feline From Smoky Blaze
An Elmwood Park fire lieutenant rescued a cat caught in a weekend evening house blaze. The blaze broke out in the basement, with smoke pushing up to the second floor of the Oak Street home near Market Street around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, responders said. Firefighters quickly knocked down the flames, preventing further damage. The fire was officially declared under control less than an hour after the call. Lt. Chris Gilmore found the frightened feline, who was brought outside, given oxygen and doing fine.

: First-Responding Paterson Police Officers Evacuate Burning Building
UPDATE: A trio of Paterson police heroes evacuated a multi-family home during a Saturday morning fire, getting several residents to safety, authorities confirmed. Officers Edward Akins, Kevin Brito and Mark Alvarez were instantly on the scene of the Oak Street fire and got all of the residents out safely, Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale said. The officers selflessly "put others' lives before their own," the director said. Fair Lawn Teen Honors Dad's Memory
As he rushed to a Fair Lawn house fire on Wednesday, a young volunteer carried with him a heavy heart. Junior Fair Lawn Firefighter Terrance Pridmore, 17, “dropped everything to help out with the fire even though his dad passed away last month,” his mother said after the Oak Street blaze. The wake for Terrance Pridmore Sr. was Thursday evening at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Ave., Hawthorne, NJ 07506.
