Hudsonite Who Got Mail-Order Fentanyl From Mexico Gets Two Years, No Parole, In Federal Prison
A Hudson County man who had mail-order fentanyl from Mexico shipped to his home was sentenced Thursday to a month short of two years in federal prison. Miguel Polanco, 31, must serve out just about all of the 23-month plea-bargained sentence because there's no parole in the federal prison system. Polanco became the focus of an investigation after U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents intercepted the package from Mexico City on its way to his Union City apartment, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger previously said. Polanco had watched a how-to video sent to him by a conspirator on h…

Feds: ID Thief Fraudulently Collected $140,000 In Pandemic Insurance While In Prison
People from all walks of life have fraudulently collected pandemic benefits, but Devontae Stokes took it to a different level. Stokes, a 27-year-old identity thief, was serving time at Fort Dix on an unspecified conviction when he schemed with others to collect $140,000 in COVID unemployment benefits while they were federal prisoners. That’s right. Stokes was a prisoner at the low-security Federal Correctional Institution adjacent to the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in Burlington County when he and a group of co-conspirators “obtained personal identification information, including nam…

NJ Uber Carjacker Gets 6½ Years In Federal Prison
A Newark man was sentenced Monday to a plea-bargained 6½ years in federal prison for helping a gunman drag an Uber driver from her car and throw her to the ground during a carjacking. Raquin Tanner, 25, will have to serve just about all of the term because there's no parole in the federal prison system. The victim was in the driver’s seat of her parked car on Summer Avenue in Newark around 11 p.m. Aug. 13, 2019 when Tanner and two other thugs approached from around the corner, Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael Honig said. As they neared the vehicle, video surveillance shows, Tanner “spoke…

Feds: Imprisoned Paterson Dealer Admits Selling Heroin That Killed User From Warwick, NY
A twice-imprisoned drug dealer from Paterson admitted he sold the heroin that killed a user from Orange County, NY. Shameik "Homeboy" Byrd, 31, who’s currently serving a state prison sentence, told a federal judge via videoconference in Newark that the death of 25-year-old Kean Cabral of Warwick was caused by heroin from the batch of “Trap Queen” that he’d been selling. State authorities tried to prosecute Byrd and a couple who they said bought the drugs from him and sold some to Cabral in April 2016. They were over-ruled, however, by the New Jersey Supreme Court, which said they didn’t ha…

Feds: Teaneck Owner Of 70 Multi-Family Properties Admits $150M Bank Fraud Scheme
A Teaneck landlord admitted in federal court this week that he orchestrated a $150 million bank and securities fraud scheme that lasted nearly 10 years. Seth Levine, 52, told a U.S. District Court judge in Newark via teleconference that he and others pocketed cash they received by illegally refinancing 70 multi-family buildings containing nearly 2,500 apartments. Levine said he lied on refinancing applications about the rents collected, the number of apartments leased, expenses and the true owners of the complex, Acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Rachael A. Honig said. That wasn’t all: L…

Morristown Woman Gets 18 Months In Fed Pen For Smuggling $2M In Airplane Parts To Iran
A Morristown woman must spend the next year and a half in federal prison for helping smuggle more than $2 million worth of aircraft parts to buyers in Iran who authorities said have ties to Hezbollah and Hammas. Joyce Eliabachus, 53, was the principal officer and operator of Edsun Equipments, a purported New Jersey-based aviation parts trading company that she ran from her home, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said. She conspired with others in “an international procurement network that surreptitiously acquired large quantities of aircraft components from United States-based manufacturers and…
