Man Punches Mom With Dementia, 94, In Head, Kicks Officer In Bergen County: Police
A 61-year-old Bergen County man is in custody for assaulting two women, including his 94-year-old mother, police said.
Oakland officers were called to a local home where they were met by a 61-year-old woman, who was assaulted by a man later identified by police 61-year-old David O'Brien on Sunday, Sept. 15 around 7:30 p.m., Oakland Police Capt. Timothy Keenan said.
After arresting O'Brien, officers learned he'd punched his 94-year-old mother in the side of the head.

Two Bergen County caretakers face manslaughter charges after they allegedly tied up a disabled man, stuffed a sock in his mouth and dumped his body, NJ Advance Media reports.
Michael Kestenbaum, 62, was found dead at about 7:20 p.m. on Dec. 8, 2022, along Ackerman Street near Route 4 West in River Edge, authorities said. Charged on Thursday, Jan. 19, were Tyrone Closs, 32, and Aniesa Samad, 24, Musella said in a press statement.

Feds: Essex Woman, Accomplices Scam Seniors Out Of $675,000 In Bogus Lottery Scheme
Several elderly victims lost at least $675,000 to a crew of scammers who told them that they’d won the lottery, federal authorities said.
The vulnerable victims “received telephone calls alerting them that they had won large sums of money and various other prizes,” U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said Monday. “The victims were informed that they would have to pay taxes on these winnings.”
The victims, in turn, sent $675,000 in checks to Shanile Lyle, 27, of Orange, and a group of conspirators, he said.

PARK RIDGE, N.J. – A Park Ridge woman stole $150,000 from her 94-year-old neighbor – using some of the money to build an addition onto her own house -- after getting power of attorney, said authorities who arrested her.
Kim Covello, 62, left her neighbor “completely depleted” of funds, forcing her into seeking public assistance, Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo said.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. -- A Woodcliff Lake financial fleeced two elderly victims of more than $1 million, said authorities who arrested him on theft by deception charges.
Jeffrey Palish, 64, first “failed to make payments on a $100,000 loan that he had received from two elderly clients, a loan which he had failed to disclose to the financial institution at which he was employed,” Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo said Thursday.
