TENAFLY, N.J. — A Tenafly Middle School student is hosting a bake sale for a local pet rescue organization.

Nicole Selick, a 12-year-old seventh grader at Tenafly Middle School, was inspired to help Pet ResQ by the work of a Harrington Park teen. She put her baking skills to the test for a two-day bake sale fundraiser that was a smash on Thursday.

"Nicole came home and her first words as she entered the house were, 'We sold out in ten minutes’,” her mother said. "She was standing in the doorway holding two empty large cupcake containers."

Nicole made about $58. The sale was continuing Friday, Nov. 13.

With permission from school administrators, Nicole made mini cupcakes, brownies and muffins -- as well as dog- and dog bone-shaped cookies from her grandmother's special recipe. Two of her friends helped her sell the items and distribute more than 20 Pet ResQ brochures to students of all grades who attended the event.

Nicole has been able to identify different breeds and mixes since she was a toddler, her mother said.

After the family's 16-year-old cat, Iggy, died in August, they adopted an eight-week-old pure-bred beagle, Bruce.

He and Nicole wake up each morning at 6 for walks and feedings. Nicole's mother says she gives the canine attention without complaint.

Nicole received the Studentship Award and Growth Award from her principal ahead of the end of the school year.

She plays the flute and tennis and is preparing her mitzvah project for her bat mitzvah in April 2016 -- she's hoping to volunteer for an animal rescue group or animal shelter.

Her mother says Nicole might even become a pet entrepreneur. As long as she's working with dogs, she says, she'll be happy.
