Third day at GWB, rookie Port Authority officer grabs attempted jumper

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A rookie officer patrolling the George Washington Bridge for only her third day pulled an emotionally disturbed man back from a bridge railing after he put one leg over the side — barely an hour and a half after two of her colleagues delivered a baby at the toll booths.

Police Officer Katherine Acevedo found the troubled man pacing back and forth on the south walkway around 8:15 a.m., the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

She began talking with him, but the man began walking away, he said.

Then, without warning, he put his leg over the outer railing, Pentangelo said.

The 5-foot-3-inch Acevedo grabbed the 5-foot-11-inch man, pulled him back on the walkway and restrained him until backups arrived.

He was taken to Englewood Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation, Pentangelo said.
