The victim — a Maryland man who sources said had recently retired — was choking on a large piece of brisket when a doctor at the afternoon meal tried the Heimlich maneuver with no luck, Capt. Michael deMoncada told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Officers who responded within a few minutes found the victim turning blue and struggling to breathe, deMoncada said.
Lt. Ralph Lawrance and Officers James Yankowsky and Officer Louis Smaragdakis gave it a few more tries before Lawrence finally dislodged the obstruction.
Tenafly Volunteer Ambulance workers and paramedics from Englewood Hospital and Medical Center arrived soon after.
The victim was taken to EHMC, where he was kept overnight for observation.
