Officer Brad Adams stopped the 1993 Chevy Cavalier -- which had faulty lights and an expired inspection sticker -- as it headed east on East Clinton Avenue near Serpentine Road at 12:42 a.m., Detective Capt. Michael deMoncada said.

Both the driver, Eric D. Smith, and his passenger, Kasib K. Jones -- both 21, from Newark -- had outstanding traffic warrants out of Newark, he said.

Adams also noticed marijuana packed in zip-locking bags on the floor and requested backup, the captain said.

Officers Joseph Grieco, Patrick Baumuller, and Vincent Cooper arrived soon after.

Besides the drugs, the officers collected $474 in cash and a digital scale, deMoncada said.

They charged two other passengers -- Kyree Z. Bogan, 21, and Quawan N. Edwards, 20, with having the drugs for sale.

A judge later ordered Edwards held on $50,000 bail, and Bogan $10,000, in the Bergen County Jail. Smith and Jones were released on summonses.
