Lt. Jesse Cohen and Officer Timothy Conboy approached the white Mazda with New York license plates at the Mobil station Monday afternoon, Police Chief Michael Coppola said.

While asking the driver for his paperwork, they smelled pot, he said.

Sgt. Fabricio Salazar and Officer Jeffrey Lamboy joined their colleagues and the trio was ordered out of the car, Coppola said.

Seven vacuum bags of marijuana were found in a piece of luggage during a subsequent search, he said.

Driver Roger L. Hess, 20, of Walden, NY and his brother, 21-year-old Jeffrey L. Hess of Newburgh, NY, had picked up a second passenger, Tyler Paez, 24, of Bakersfield, CA at JFK Airport, Coppola said.

They were headed to Newburgh when they were stopped, he said.

All three were ordered held on $44,000 bail each in the Bergen County Jail, charged with possession of more than five pounds of marijuana with the intent to sell it.
