Officers called by a customer around 5 p.m. last Wednesday found the victim face down and unconscious on the exit ramp of the southbound Sunoco station in Englewood Cliffs, PIP Police Chief Michael Coppola said tonight.
EMS took him to Englewood Hospital Medical Center and Medical Center with a head injury, for which he was treated before later being released, Coppola said.
Detective Roman Galloza later interviewed him and found that he’d been driven to various locations in Rockland County by 42-year-old Binyomin Belsky, the chief said.
Belsky “stopped at the southbound Sunoco station where he went to sleep in the southern most parking spot in the gas station” in the vehicle while the victim “remained in the back seat,” he said.
After about two hours, the victim said, he went to use the bathroom.
During that time, Coppola said, Belsky “woke up, started the vehicle, and began to leave the area.”
Seeing this, the victim said he tried to get back into the car and became caught on the passenger door.
Belsky “exited the gas station at a high rate of speed with the victim still attached to the vehicle,” Coppola said.
Flash forward to Sunday, when Officer Richard Dey spotted Belsky driving next to him in the parkway’s northbound lanes near the State Line Lookout in Alpine.
Dey pulled Belsky over and arrested him, Coppola said.
Belsky, who was charged with aggravated assault by auto, posted $100,000 bail a short time later and was released from the Bergen County Jail pending a court hearing.
