The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations alerted authorities in New Jersey that Donald J. Kohut Jr., 34, could be living in Raritan Township, NJSP Sgt. Brian Polite said this afternoon.
Yesterday, NJSP fugitive unit officers, along with members of the US Marshals New York/ New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Raritan Township Police Department went to the address given and arrested Kohut.
Charged with being a fugitive from justice, Kohut is being held without bail in the Hunterdon County Jail pending extradition proceedings.
Polite said Kohut “established a relationship with a female death row inmate in Tennessee” and apparently was “in the process of formulating a plan to help her escape from prison. During the planning phases of his operation, Kohut bribed correctional officials in that state.”
Authorities there issued a warrant on Feb. 13 charging Kohut with conspiracy to commit escape from a prison and conspiracy to bribe a public servant, Polite said.
