The 37-year-old victim said he was walking south on George Street near West Clinton Avenue around 7 p.m. Monday when the robbers approached him from behind.
Both were black, about 5’10” to 6’0” and in their late teens or early 20s, Detective Capt. Michael deMoncada said.
One was wearing a black “puffy” or quilted jacket, he said, and the other a brown canvas “Carhartt”-type jacket, the man told police.
Both “had their heads partially obscured by some type of hat or headgear,” deMoncada said.
One of them “asked if he wanted to buy drugs, then grabbed his shoulder from behind,” the captain said the man told police.
He said one of them then “pulled a handgun from inside of his jacket and demanded his wallet.”
After he gave it to them, the man told police, the pair ran off and got into a silver or champagne-colored sedan parked nearby. He wasn’t injured, deMoncada said.
Officers and detectives were reviewing surveillance video. They asked that anyone who lives or has a business in the area to do the same. They also asked that anyone who might have seen something that night or has information that could help the investigation call Tenafly detectives: (201) 568-5100.
Patrol units have also increased their presence downtown, deMoncada said.
