Several police departments tried chasing the black 2015 BMW X5M later that morning, authorities said. But each had to cut off pursuit because of the speed risk, they said.
A Ridge Road resident reported the Beamer stolen before dawn Thursday, Capt. Michael deMoncada said.
“The victim stated the key fob was apparently left in another unlocked vehicle, which was parked next to the stolen car,” he said.
Surveillance video showed at least one vehicle stop in front of the home at around 2 a.m., the captain said.
Two people got out and approached the driveway. One then used the fob from the car next to it to unlock and steal the BMW, deMoncada said.
One of the thieves was described as black with facial hair and the other as white or light-skinned Hispanic with tattoos on one arm.
“Several law enforcement agencies spotted the vehicle later that morning across several counties, but were unable to safely stop or recover the vehicle, [which] was last seen headed into Irvington, near Newark,” the captain said.
deMoncada repeated previous warnings about not becoming a car theft victim.
“Please do not allow yourselves to be complacent,” he said. “Always lock your car and remove all keys, fobs, and valuables from inside the passenger compartment after parking your vehicle.”
