The 35-year-old victim dialed 911 after regaining consciousness on a side street following the attack just before 2 a.m. yesterday, Detective Capt. Timothy Torell said this afternoon.

“This was a particularly brutal attack and we’re hoping someone in the community knows something and will call it in,” Torell said.

Meanwhile, police are trying to determine how long the woman was unconscious and whether security cameras in the area captured images of the mugging.

Investigators believe the woman — who was later treated for a concussion, facial cuts and a leg injury — was stalked as she made a late-night to run to an ATM on West Street and then the Shoprite at Palisade Court, Torell sid.

“As she was walking home carrying several bags of groceries and her pocketbook over her shoulder, she realized she was being followed,” the captain said. “She tried to walk up a small side street called Tallman Place. Her thinking was to get to a more residential area where her screams could be heard if she was attacked.

“Unfortunately, she never made it,” he said.

Although struck over the head with a large object, the woman fought back.

She was then hit in the face, knocking her out, Torell said.

“When the officers arrived, they found the contents of her pocketbook spread out all around her. All her cash and groceries had been taken,” he said.

Anyone with information that can help the investigation is asked to call Englewood police: (201) 568-2711 or (201) 568-4875.
