Englewood Police Treat Youngsters To Medevac, K-9 Unit, Free Backpacks

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. -- There's nothing like a medical chopper landing, a K-9 unit display and free backpacks to help boost law enforcement's image with local youngsters, as Englewood police proved.

The department and PBA Local 216 brought those delights and more to their 2nd Annual Cops and Kids Summer Kick Off at Dr. John Grieco Elementary School.

Held in conjunction with Englewood Schools Supt. Robert Kravitz and Principal Daniela Small-Bailey, the event included:

  • a New Jersey State Police NorthSTAR helicopter landing;
  • a demonstration by the Bergen County Sheriff's K-9 unit;
  • a visit from the Englewood police motorcycle unit;
  • a bike safety and stranger danger presentation by the department's Youth Services Unit.

A question-and-answer period with the children followed the June 9 demonstrations.

The PBA provided lunch for the students and teachers and the department bought reflective backpacks for all students.

Yet there was more: The New Jersey Special Olympics Torch Run was rerouted to pass front of the school so that the youngsters could cheer their heroes on.
