Leon Roberts Jr., Michael Lockett, Tyrone Harrison (MUGSHOTS: Englewood PD)
The two burglars broke into a First Street house in the city’s 4th Ward “thinking no one was at home at the time,” Detective Lt. Tim Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “The resident surprised the pair and attempted to hold both burglars until the police arrived.”
He was successful in detaining 19-year-old Englewood resident Michael Lockett, who was arrested and charged with robbery and burglary, the lieutenant said.
Detectives then obtained an arrest warrant, charging robbery and burglary, for 20-year-old Tyrone Harrison, also of Englewood.
Last Thursday, Patrol Officer Joseph Doyle spotted Harrison in the area of West Palisade Avenue and William Street. A perimeter was quickly put into place.
Torell said he was hiding behind the Uptown Barber Shop on West Palisade Avenue when he saw a vehicle quickly pull into the parking lot.
“Harrison ran from his hiding spot and jumped into the rear passenger seat of the vehicle that pulled in,” the lieutenant told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
As the car pulled out, Torell gave the signal and officers moved in. Doyle found Harrison hiding in the rear seat and arrested him, the lieutenant said.
Also arrested was the driver of the vehicle, 19-year-old Englewood resident Leon Roberts Jr. He was charged with hindering apprehension.
Lockett posted $60,000 and was released two weeks after he was arrested. Roberts is free on $15,000 bail. Harrison was still being held on $125,000 bail.
“Like other jurisdictions in New Jersey lately, we are experiencing a significant increase in residential burglaries,” Police Chief Arthur O’Keefe told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “Even more of a concern to us is an increase of incidents in which burglars and residents are interacting. These burglars are going into homes using minimal, if any, precautions that people are at home.
“We will aggressively pursue any and all leads to exhaustion in our efforts to arrest these burglars and ensure the safety of our residents.”
