The victim was headed eastbound as he crossed Grand Avenue on the south side of its intersection with Phelps Avenue when he was struck by a 2014 Mercedes ML350 driven by a 40-year-old Old Tappan man as he turned from Phelps around 5:10 p.m., Police Chief Lawrence Suffern said.

"The victim was found unconscious and sustained serious injuries to his face and spine (multiple fractures to his face, shattered or fractured vertebrae) and was also found to have some bleeding to his brain," Suffern said.

He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, the chief said, adding that the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with detectives.

No criminal charges were filed.

However, Suffern said a summons will be issued for failing to stop for a pedestrian in an unmarked crosswalk.
