U.S. Marshals tracked Michael Ratliff, 35. to a hotel in Dekalb County, where they took him into custody two weeks ago.
The 6-foot-tall, 420-pound Ratliff took off before Englewood police arrested five people — including a brother and sister — following a chain of events that began with the brutal mugging two months ago of a Chinese food deliveryman.
The victim was lured to a closed West Forest Avenue business, where he was set upon by several men, Detective Capt. Timothy Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
Despite his ordeal, the 40-year-old driver flagged down a passing city police officer, who saw his assailant run into an Epps Avenue residence.
Backups arrived, surrounded the house and took four people inside into custody.
Kavon Major, Andre Chance and Ghanore Gnegbo, all from Englewood, were charged with robbery. Andre Chance’s sister, Chanel Chance, was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Union Township. Her brother was also wanted out of Atlantic City, Torell said.
Detectives had been searching for Gnegbo in connection with a September 2013 residential burglary in Englewood’s 4th Ward in which two televisions and several bottles of liquor were taken.
“That alone would have been a good day’s work for our officers,” the captain said of the busts.
However, during the arrests police found hundreds of stolen boxes of Aveeno make-up remover wipes “jammed into almost every room in the small house,” he said.
The boxes had been diverted during a cargo theft from a facility in the Nyack/Clarkstown area, detectives discovered.
Johnson & Johnson provided a tractor-trailer and crew to help remove, count and store the 2,900 boxes, valued at $48 each.
With the assistance of the Franklin Police Department in Somerset County, authorities arrested Englewood truck driver Gary Caviness after he showed up there in an 18-wheeler with some of the stolen products found in the house, Torell said.
Ratliff was involved in moving and storing the wipes but not in the robbery or assault, the captain said. He was being held on $50,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with receiving stolen property.
