A manhunt also was under way for a father who police said knocked down his Englewood girlfriend and threatened her with a knife as she held their child during an argument over some photos on their cellphones, Detective Capt. Tim Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
The incidents began Friday afternoon, when officers dispatched to a domestic violence call in the city’s 3rd Ward found a 24-year-old woman who said she’d been knocked down and threatened with a knife by her boyfriend as she held their 5-month-old child, Torell said.
The woman told police that the two “got into an argument over some photos on their cellphones,” he said.
A family member interceded, and 30-year-old Andre Mendez of Manhattan (above, middle) fled, the captain said.
City detectives were working with their NYPD colleagues to locate Mendez, who is charged with domestic violence assault, menacing, making terroristic threats, weapons possession and child endangerment, he said.
The child wasn’t harmed, while the mother’s injuries didn’t require medical attention, Torell said.
The Division of Child Protection & Permanency was also notified, he said.
“Fortunately for everyone involved, Mendez chose to run from the scene before things got worse,” Torell said. “If anyone knows the whereabouts of Mendez, they can contact the Englewood Police Department at (201) 568-2711.
“All calls will remain confidential.”
Roughly 20 minutes after that call, police officers found a 49-year-old city woman in the 4th Ward with a cut on her head that she said she got when her 74-year-old boyfriend hit her with a snow shovel during a fight.
When she called police, the woman said, Kharl Harris “grabbed a knife, cut himself and told her he would tell the police she did it,” Torell said.
“These types of incidents aren’t that uncommon,” he said. “Our Officers are trained to take all factors into consideration when investigating domestic violence incidents.
“In this case, they determined that Harris’ minor cut injuries were consistent with self-inflicted wounds,” the captain said.
Harris was being held on $20,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with aggravated assault with a weapon.
The victim was treated at a local hospital and later released, he said.
The final incident in the sting occurred around 1:30 a.m. yesterday, Torell said, when a 29-year-old city woman was “beaten MMA style” by her live-in boyfriend during an argument in the 3rd Ward.
The woman fled the apartment and called police, but Henry Marksbury Jr. (above, right) refused to come out immediately, the captain said.
“Eventually, after some time, one of the officers he knew previously was able to convince Marksbury to surrender,” he said.
He was charged with aggravated assault, obstruction & resisting arrest and was later released on $76,500 bail pending grand jury action.
The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment, Torell said.
