The crash occurred just after 12:30 p.m. Sunday on East Clinton Avenue about 100 yards west of the intersection of Old Smith Road.
Paul Bertinato, 59, who was wearing a helmet and riding in front, was knocked into the curb and a utility pole after the bicycle he and a companion were on sustained a mechanical failure, Capt. Michael deMoncada said.
Patrol officers and a family member who witnessed the crash began CPR until paramedics from Englewood Hospital and Medical Center and volunteers from the Tenafly Ambulance Corps arrived on scene, deMoncada said.
Bertinato, who sustained head and facial injuries, was then taken to the hospital, he said.
The rear rider was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
“Unfortunately, we later learned that Mr. Bertinato died of his injuries a short time after arriving at the hospital,” deMoncada said. “The members of the Tenafly Police Department would like to extend our sincere condolences to Mr. Bertinato’s family as they grieve his loss.”
