Driver Passes Tenafly Police, Crashes, After Girlfriend Gets Out

TENAFLY, N.J. -- A woman was telling Tenafly police officers that she'd gotten out of her boyfriend's car during a fight when he suddenly came driving by them, took a turn -- and crashed the vehicle into a local backyard, authorities said.

Officers James Yankowsky and Matthew Savitsky, investigating a report of a dispute, found the woman standing on the sidewalk on Engle Street near Edward Court at 12:15 a.m. Saturday, Detective Capt. Michael deMoncada said.

As they talked, 35-year-old Ryan Sy of Jersey City came driving south down Engle Street, deMoncada said.

Sy "drove past the officers and accelerated abruptly while turning onto Ravine Road," he said.

Savitsky radioed to other officers in the area, and Sgt. Nicholas Roux and Officer Manuel Fidel found the vehicle -- along with Sy -- in a Ravine Road backyard.

The car had "crashed through several fences before coming to rest adjacent to a garage on a neighboring property," the captain said.

Officers arrested Sy after he failed several field sobriety tests, deMoncada said.

He was charged with DWI and careless driving and released to a "responsible party" soon after.
