Somduth Soborun, 61, pleaded guilty in September to the charge, for which U.S. Magistrate Judge Patty Shwartz fined him today. He also has agreed to pay the worker $24,153 in restitution.
“Like all human beings, I have failings, too,” Soborun told Shwartz earlier today.
“I’d like to assure you that it was not, it has never been, and it will never be my intent to hurt anyone in the future,” said Soborun, who has served as Mauritius’ ambassador to the U.S. since being appointed to the post in January 2011.
According to U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman’s office:
“Soborun obtained a visa for a Filipina national, C.V., to come to the United States to work as a housekeeper. From late December 2008 through early August 2009, C.V. worked in the Soborun household by cleaning, doing laundry, ironing, and taking care of the family dog, usually for 12 hours per day, six days per week.
“Although Soborun signed a contract which provided for an hourly wage as well as for overtime pay for any hours exceeding 40 per week, Soborun only paid C.V. $1,000 per month, regardless of how many hours she worked each month.”
Fishman credited special agents of the FBI for the investigation leading to the guilty plea and subsequent fine.
