A Palisades Interstate Police officer on patrol found an unoccupied Subaru Forester parked in the lot just after 10:30 p.m., several hours after closing, Police Chief Michael Coppola said Thursday.
She and a backup officer searched the area and found an unattended woman's hand bag on a rock wall located north of the main overlook along old Route 9W, he said.
"As they investigated the area closer, they discovered an unconscious female laying below the rock wall who was visibly deceased," the chief said. "EMS and paramedics were notified and pronounced the victim deceased a short time thereafter."
The Bergen County Medical Examiner and county sheriff's Bureau of Criminal lnvestigation responded along with PIP detectives.
"At this time, there is not enough information to determine a cause of death or circumstances leading to her death, and this is still an active investigation," Coppola said just before 1:30 p.m. "Further information surrounding this incident will be released when confirmed and available."
EDITOR's NOTE: Daily Voice was withholding the woman's identity pending the outcome of the investigation.
