Bergen Prosecutor Monitoring Palisades Parkway PD After Suspects' Deaths

ALPINE, N.J. -- The Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department has agreed to be monitored by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, following the separate deaths this year of two suspects during pursuits.

Under the agreement, the office will:

  • "ensure the orderly administraton of the law enforcement function of the PIPPD";
  • "conduct a review of its operating procedures";
  • "retrain members of the PIPPD on Attorney General and Prosecutor guidelines, directives, policies and relevant laws";
  • "ensure that the PIPPD complies with and administers itself in complaince with the same."

Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal announced the move in a memo to the Bergen County Police Chiefs Association.

He did not outline the reasons for it.

Law enforcement sources who spoke on condition of anonymity cited pursuits that ended in deaths -- including one this past May involving a fleeing motorcyclist.

In June, a man being chased by parkway officers fell to his death from the Palisades.

The Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Dept is responsible for the public safety of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission properties and the parkway itself in New Jersey.
