Steven Greytak, 41, of Patchogue, was being held on $356,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail on a host of drug and police impersonation charges.
Officers Michael Griffin and Joseph Villone were “conducting routine patrol operations on the Palisades Interstate Parkway,” PIP Police Chief Michael Coppola said, when they spotted a black 2008 Chevy Avalanche with a defective taillight parked at the southbound Sunoco gas station in Englewood Cliffs around 10:40 p.m. Friday.
Approaching the vehicle, they “noticed a strong odor of marijuana” and asked Greytak for identification.
He, in turn, “identified himself as a law enforcement officer — specifically by stating he was a federal agent with the ATF,” Coppola said.
The officers spotted “numerous law enforcement paraphernalia such as shirts and vehicle markings,” the cheif added.
Greytak was taken into custody after the officers found him carrying a switchblade and a small container with various pills, he said.
He refused to consent to a search of the vehicle, so they impounded it and applied for a search warrant, Coppola said.
A warranted search yesterday turned up the drugs, along with a scale and other packaging/distribution materials, he said.
