2016 Mercedes Swiped From Tenafly Driveway, Police Urge Caution

TENAFLY, N.J. – Tenafly police once again were forced to remind citizens to not leave their cars unlocked – especially with the keys inside – after someone swiped a 2016 Mercedes Benz from a driveway and stole a backpack from another vehicle on the same block sometime overnight.

Surveillance video shows three young men – their faces obscured by cinched hoodies – getting of a car on Woodland Street and approaching the Mercedes around 4:30 a.m., Capt. Michael deMoncada said Thursday afternoon.

One got in and drove south on Woodland as the others left, he said.

Another Woodland Park resident reported a backpack stolen from a vehicle sometime overnight. Police found the pack on a nearby property and returned it to the owner with nothing apparently missing from inside, deMoncada said.

“Due to the proximity and time-frame of both of these events, it is likely that they were perpetrated by the same individuals and that other vehicles in the area may have been targeted,” the captain said.

“Anyone who believes they may also be a victim is urged to contact the Tenafly Police Department at (201) 568-5100,” he said.

deMoncada also urged vehicle owners to “remove keys and valuables at night, and to keep cars locked when left unattended – even if parked in your own driveway.”
