2 Port Authority officers OK after being shot when gun discharges during cleaning

BEYOND BERGEN: A gun that accidentally went off while being cleaned by a Port Authority Police officer at a Port Newark police facility in Elizabeth yesterday pierced his left hand and struck an officer standing nearby in the thigh, authorities confirmed this morning.

According to authority spokesman Steve Coleman:

“About 2:15 p.m. [yesterday], a Port Authority Police officer assigned to the Commercial Vehicle Inspection unit was cleaning his weapon inside a police facility at Port Newark when the weapon accidently discharged.

“The bullet pierced the officer’s left hand and then struck a second officer standing nearby in the left thigh.

“Both officers were taken to University Hospital in Newark in stable condition. The incident is under investigation by the Port Authority’s Inspector General’s Office and the PAPD.

“Both officers have since been treated and released.”
