'Make Englewood A Sanctuary City,' NJ Assemblyman Says

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. — To protect Latino immigrants, Assemblyman Gordon Johnson (D-Teaneck) has suggested that Englewood become a sanctuary city.

"It goes against our American values," Johnson said, referring to President Donald Trump's executive orders focused on immigration.

The President has signaled his intention to curtail Latino immigration into the U.S, but so far has focused on immigrants from the Middle East

Sanctuary cities adopt a principle that prevents them from using resources to enforce federal immigration laws. In practice, this allows illegal immigrants access to city services without fear of being deported.

Johnson, a local who's lived in Englewood for more than 50 years, said the town has a high population of Latinos.

"We have a large Latino community," he said. "Elected officials should show our support for them by making the city of Englewood a sanctuary city."

Johnson made his suggestion at the Englewood city council meeting earlier this week.

A significant number of cities and counties in the U.S. have chosen to adopt sanctuary city policies.

President Trump, however, has suggested he may cut federal funding to municipalities that continue such policies.
