Police responded to reports of a large fight at Madison Plaza on River Road around 3:15 p.m. on Monday, March 17, according to Jeff Angermeyer, Bergen County Prosecutor’s Deputy Chief of Detectives.
Officers arrived to find a stabbed victim at the scene, but the suspect or suspects had already fled, officials said. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and remains in critical but stable condition.
New Milford Police Chief Brian Clancy said the 18-year-old victim was hospitalized in critical condition and two suspects were in custody as of press time.
New Milford Public Schools released the following statement:
This message is to inform you of an incident that occurred outside New Milford High School today, March 17th. Shortly after dismissal, an altercation took place in the school parking lot involving New Milford High School students and juveniles not affiliated with the district. Law enforcement responded promptly and is currently investigating the incident. Two individuals are now in custody. The New Milford Police Department is working closely with the school district to ensure the continued safety and security of all students and staff.Preliminary information indicates this was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to any of our schools. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. New Milford High School will resume its regular schedule tomorrow, March 18, 2025. Counseling services will be available for any students and staff who may require support. We encourage those who need assistance to utilize these resources.The district extends its appreciation to the New Milford Police Department for their swift response and ongoing partnership in maintaining a safe environment.
