Rothman was born in Englewood, and he lived there until the fifth grade, when his family moved to Tenafly. He returned to Englewood in 1977 and opened his own law firm there in 1980.

When he was sworn in as mayor in 1983, for the first of his two terms, he was 30 and was the city's youngest mayor. The record still stands.

Rothman didn't seek a third term. He was elected Bergen County Surrogate Court judge in 1992 and served in that position for three years until he decided to run for Congress.

Rothman won the 9th Congressional District seat in 1996 -- and seven times after -- but was felled by redistricting. When the 9th District was redrawn, Rothman ran against the incumbent from the 8th District, Bill Pascrell, and lost to him in the 2012 primary election.
