In addition to trying to manage the devastating effects that the cancer left on her body, Sanchez who moved to the U.S. from Colombia when she was 10, is still battling.
More than $5,000 had been raised as of Friday evening on a GoFundMe page to help buoy the costs for Sanchez, a senior librarian at the Englewood Public Library.
Sanchez is currently undergoing non-toxic cancer treatment in Tijuana, Mexico.
Her first diagnosis came nine years ago for Sanchez — a U.S. military veteran. It was breast cancer. Two years later, was told by her doctor that the cancer had metastasized to her bones.
More chemo. More surgery. More stress.
Two years later, the left side of her brain, then the right.
More surgery. More radiation. More pain.
Three years later, again. The right side of her brain.
In 2016, Sanchez underwent a series of treatments to try to kick the cancer, once and for all. And she's sick of it.
"I've been in and out of doctors' offices, I've been poked with endless hands, I've been prodded with too many needles to count, I hold my breath every single time I'm due for a follow up," she says on the GoFundMe.
"And so here we are now in 2017, and I'm still battling, hoping to catch a break and live long enough to see all the things I’ve yet to see."
Since the conventional methods haven't seemed to work, Sanchez is hoping the alternative methods in Tijuana, which take a different approach to cancer, will reach a different outcome.
"I am hopeful that this approach will make a difference in my body’s ability to heal itself," she said. "After all, what do I have to lose, right?"
