Working alongside future homeowners Carlos and Geovana, the First Presbyterian Church members hammered, sawed, sanded and painted to turn piles of supplies into a finished Bergenfield home.
Since its founding in 1994, Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County has built and/or renovated over 20 homes, including two in Teaneck, four in Hackensack, six in Englewood, two in East Rutherford, two in Waldwick, one in Garfield, two in Oradell and five in Little Ferry.
The First Presbyterian Church of Englewood was ravaged by fire on March 22. The historic landmark is in the midst of a three year rebuilding campaign.
Dozens of firefighters from several area departments tackled the blaze at the 19th century church. Flames tore through the sanctuary collapsing the roof and destroying the Möller pipe organ, according to a March 22 Daily Voice article.
Classrooms and offices were saved but many items needed to be replaced due to smoke damage.
