Their 2008 Mazda was swerving on southbound Route 17 when Officer Matthew Orefice stopped it near Linwood Avenue, Police Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said. Update: Man Struck, Killed Trying To Cross Route 17 UPDATE: A gruesome scene had some responders looking on in shock after a pedestrian was struck and killed before dawn Saturday on Route 17 in Paramus. Both sides of the highway remained closed for several hours. The victim was a homeless man who regularly stopped in at a gas station convenience store on the northbound side looking for food, authorities said. He tried to cross the highway carrying some breakfast in the dark when he was struck and thrown onto the southbound side shortly before 6 a.m. Other vehicles then struck him on that side, responders said. The crash occurred around 1:50 p.m. on the parkway’s southbound side near Linwood Avenue. Paramus police, firefighters and EMS, New Jersey State Police and a GSP road crew were among the responders.

The original crash occurred Monday afternoon at Linwood Avenue and Paramus Road. Police were investigating that accident when the second crash occurred. The Paramus driver, who wasn’t seriously injured, was issued a careless driving summons, police said. Her Mercury Sable had to be towed. No police were reportedly injured.
