KGGHS is an all-girls high school in Seoul, South Korea, established over 100 years ago. Over 600 of its alumnae live in the tri-state area.

The competition was held on April 23, at the Korean Community Center in Tenafly. The theme of the speech contest is "Korean history, culture and people" and this year's topic was "Choose an important person, event or period in Korean history and discuss its historical context ... and its impact on Korea and its people." Yang's speech was titled "Lee Tai Young."

"The content of her speech was outstanding, and she delivered a moving speech," said NV Demarest Principal James Santana.

Yang's grand prize award includes a $1,200 scholarship and a copy of Andrew Nahm's "Korea: Tradition and Transformation -- A History of the Korean People."
