Sgt. Bert Looby went to the Westervelt Avenue home after police were called around 11 o’clock last night. When he arrived, he heard a man screaming inside, he said.

Inside, the sergeant found Joo Wan Woo, 37, naked and bleeding from his right eye. Woo’s 64-year-old father also had a cut on his head, he said.

Woo stopped shouting and complied with Looby’s orders that he get to the floor. But before he could be given first aid, police said, he got up and charged the sergeant, knocking him down.

Officer Matthew Banta grabbed Woo, took him to the floor and handcuffed him. He was then brought to Bergen Regional Medical Center for evaluation. The sergeant was fine, police said.

Woo sustained some burns after apparently lighting his t-shirt on fire and later tossing it into a bathtub. He lighted several other items in his room, including toilet paper, police said.

He is charged with aggravated arson, aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. Bail is $35,000, pending a Municipal Court hearing.
