No Food Network? Why not grab a dish?

You can choose your own phone company but not your cable company. So if you’re a Cablevision customer in love with the popular Food Network, your only choice now is to grab a dish.

More than 3 million tri-state customers were left without the show after Cablevision couldn’t agree on a deal with Scripps Networks Interactive, which operates HGTV and the Food Network.

As for any kind of 11th hour solution:

“We wish Scripps well and have no expectation of carrying their programming again, given the dramatic changes in their approach to working with distributors to reach television viewers,” said Jim Maiella, Cablevision’s vice president of media relations.

Time Warner Cable is in a similar dispute with Scripps but is still carrying the Food Network while talks continue.

A statement released by Kenneth W. Lowe, chairman of Scripps Networks Interactive, said, “Viewers love our talent and our shows, which is why Food Network and HGTV rank among the top networks in cable. But our valuable networks simply are not being compensated like top-ten networks by Cablevision.”

Here’s why you’re stuck: Elected officials of the municipality you live in award the cable contract — pure and simple. Unless or until you and your neighbors go down to Town Hall and raise a stink, the decision remains out of your hands.

Meantime: If you’re a new satellite customer, expect great pricing, a much better signal and other options that can tie in to your phone and computer.

I know because I have it.
