Although a published report elsewhere said “several” buildings were evacuated after a gas main break in North Bergen this morning, authorities said only six families had to leave two buildings — but were back in under an hour.
The incident occurred about 10:45 this morning, said township spokesman Phil Swibinski.
“A crew from Tarheel Construction working on the state Tonnelle Avenue project was excavating with a backhoe and accidentally ruptured a 6-inch gas main near Tonnelle Ave and 66th street,” he said.
North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue was called, and when the firefighters arrived “PSE&G was already working to fix the problem,” he said.
Two houses were evacuated, 6601 and 6605 Granton Avenue. Swibinski said. The rupture was quickly repaired and the residents were all back home by 11:45, he said.
