First shot of ferry crash
The Andrew J. Barberi ferry was carrying 252 passengers and 18 crew members when an undisclosed mechanical failure sent it speeding into the St. George Ferry terminal dock on Staten Island at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, witnesses and authorities reported.
Emergency crews brought 18 people to a hospital with injuries and treated 37 at the scene, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
“Emergency personnel are responding to a Staten Island docking incident,” was the first notification from the New York City Office of Emergency Management that something had gone wrong. “Expect delays at St. George Ferry Terminal.”
Dennis Pfeifer got a call from his friend, John Lance Harrison, who was on the vessel but wasn’t injured. Harrison took the photograph above left and sent it to Pfeifer.
