Patrol Officers Dona Nidelko and Byron Agauyo arrested 55-year-old Gabriel Cordoba before dawn this morning after the girl told them that he sneaked into her bedroom, got into her bed and sexually assaulted her, Detective Captain Timothy Torell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT tonight.
Cordoba, who’s never been in trouble before, had been renting a room in the attic of the West Demarest Avenue building the past four months, Torell said.
The girl has been staying there while her parents visit relatives in South America, rushed out of the room after waking up and realizing what was happening, the captain said.
She told her guardian, who called police.
“The girl and other household members were shaken, but no one was hurt,” Torell said. “The officers got there fast and made the arrest quickly and safely. She was a lucky young lady.”
After questioning him, city detectives charged Cordoba — a native of Cali — with aggravated sexual contact and burglary.
Immigration officials were notified and placed a detainer on Cordoba, who was being held on $45,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail.
