The registry is entirely voluntary and will remain "in-house and confidential," Police Chief Dennis Kaine said.
"It will allow us to quickly identify your child in any emergency situation in which a caregiver may not be present," the chief said. "It will provide us with emergency contact information that will be readily available to all officers."
Kaine said he hopes to "expand the list to all ages in the near future."
The chief defined “special needs” individuals as those who "due to physical, mental, or developmental conditions, are functionally limited in their ability to independently carry out activities of daily living."
The registration form will request pedigree information, an up-to-date photo and any personal instructions that may help us police assist a child in need.
