Marked units were on patrol at 4:45 a.m. yesterday when officers spotted a black 2003 Audi with Illinois plates traveling south in the northbound lanes of West Street.
They pulled over the driver at Liberty Street, got him out of the car and found he had “watery eyes and a strong smell of alcohol on his breath,” the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said. “He was also unsteady on his feet.”
The driver, 49-year-old Alexander L. Neymark of Wheeling, IL, was taken into custody, he said.
Neymark, who has ties to Hoboken, registered a .273 on a breath test.
He was charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.
“That’s a heavily travelled roadway at any hour,” Pentangelo said. “It’s lucky no one was hurt.”
