Musician Sherrill Milnes turns 81 years old today.
Milnes was born in Downers Grove, Ill., attended North Central College before transferring to Drake University and Northwestern University. He originally wanted to become an anesthesiologist, but returned to music, studying music education with the idea of becoming a teacher.
In 2006, Milnes was awarded an honorary doctorate from North Central College. Currently, Milnes is a college professor emeritus of voice at Northwestern University. He lives in Palm Harbor, Fla. with his wife and son, Theo.
